Later this year Karibu will launch a weekly supplementary education programme to address academic under-achievement in the African Caribbean Community. In 2003, 70% of African Caribbean boys in England left school with less than 5 GCSEs, while male unemployment in the community currently stands at around 15% . Our initiative will specifically target young black men, who have consistently been cast as underachievers in our society, helping them to escape this negative labelling and fulfil their full potential. The school will run on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, so it won’t interrupt the schooling of our students and avoid isolating them from their peers. It will be available to children from the ages of 6 – 16. At Karibu, we also understand that underachievement doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of ability - the supplementary school will have special classes for exceptionally gifted students.
